Alberta Gas Chemicals Methanol Plant Expansion
Alberta Gas Chemicals, Ltd.
Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada
Fluor provided engineering, procurement, and construction on the largest single-unit reformer built at the time in Canada.
The reformer was a key element in the Methanol Plant expansion for Alberta Gas Chemicals.
The new 1,200 T/D chemical-grade methanol facility would double Alberta Gas Chemicals’ methanol production capability at Medicine Hat.
It included the process operations of natural gas stream reforming, compression, synthesis, and distillation.
Fluor’s Canada office in Calgary completed the engineering with a task force that peaked at over 200 engineers and technical specialists.
The Fluor project management team oversaw construction that was performed by both Fluor direct-hire labour and by 30 subcontractors.
Fluor’s assignment also called for development of utility and offsite facilities and integration of the new plant with existing facility.
Fluor completed the methanol plant expansion project ahead of schedule and under budget.
The new plant was based on Alberta Gas technology and ICI methanol synthesis.
